Singapore prevents young men from migrating to the West

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Under Singapore law, young men who turn 18 are required to do national service, which is spending 2 years in the Army. After that they have to serve about a month or less each year in the army as reservists for 10 years.

During this time, the citizen requires permission to go overseas, and his passport is valid only for the duration of the trip.

This causes several problems against free movement. The citizen is only allowed to remain aboard for the duration of the exit permit which may be only a few months. If he decides to remain abroad longer, his passport becomes invalid which requires his attendance at a Singapore Consulate in that country to ask permission for an extension, which is never granted if the army refuses his request; which they always do.

This means from that point, he becomes a fugitive, liable to arrest and imprisonment if he returns.

Let us not try to deceive ourselves. This 10 long years during which time, the poor young man is kept under a leash, is nothing other than an attempt to prevent him from migrating.

We can imagine numerous scenarios where the citizen, once abroad finds an opportunity to stay. But he cannot do it, because unless the government grants him permission not to return, which never happens, he simply has either to break Singapore law and become a fugitive, or return and remain in Singapore until the 10 years have passed before he could leave.

This thing is nothing but slavery at the hands of the Singaporean dictator, Lee Kuan Yew. And he manages to get away with it, because Singaporeans have become so submissive and docile after years of indoctrination that they do not understand that they have a right to refuse the government and simply not come back, in which event, there is nothing that Lee or anyone else can do.

I ask Singaporean young men not to be afraid to simply break this unjust law of bondage through the guise of military service. Singapore is not fighting anyone and there is simply no need to require every young man to remain in Singapore for 10 long years after national service.

And by the way, national service in Singapore, by itself, serves no military value whatsoever. The whole idea is not to teach you to fight, but to teach you to submit like a mouse, which is completely achieved by the daily routine of having to obey orders, and usually, I may add, stupid orders. After submitting to his military superiors every day of his life for 2 years, he comes out perfectly willing to take orders from Lee Kuan Yew.

Break this unjust law. Leave Singapore anytime you want and live out your life, aspirations and career in the West if that is what you want.

And Good Luck to you.

Gopalan: is the mandatory military service due to a perceived potential threat of invasion by neighbouring Malaysia or Indonesia?

To Anonymous,
If you thought Malaysia and Indonesia are threats to Singapore, you must have been in Mars the last 40 years!

Dear Gopalan,
Based on what is stated here, is it correct to say that a male citizen who decides not to return is safe as long as he does not step back into Singapore in future?

this post triggered my nerve:
I am also against these government policies of forcing young SG male citizens to spend their two very important years of their lives in the army. having served my two years and doing reservist every year i feel that some professions in the army is a total waste of time. I am a regimental police. nice name for security guard. and guard where one might ask? sometimes it was HQ full of generals.
opening and closing gates.
changing passes.
sometimes the passage of tarmac between the civilian side and military side of the airport. guarding the occasional fly that comes through.
what good does it do? what does this teach us? how does this enrich our lives so that we come out a better man? none. total waste of time. i used to envy the drivers, at least they have potential of getting a "free" driving license when they leave the army, easily worth $2000. i have friends who have left and never could return even they have families here. they seen opportunity abroad and stayed there to study and work overseas. however due to family finance situation, i could not forgo the $75000 deposit my family had to put down as a government policy in case i do not return. my studies got interrupted, lost all my friends. just because of the deposit. my friends were in university pursuing their degree and some starting their career. while i'm holding the rifle, yawning and waiting for my shift to end. it's so sad to be an able-bodied male in SG.
why don't i have a finger injury or dust allergy?

Exactly what happened to me and exactly what I did. I am happy. I can never go back. To all the others in my shoes, you are not alone. All the best.

Ye I'm the same, I'm in one of the top 10 uni's in the world, working my way towards a medical degree. I can't go back, and you know what, the price of going home's too high. The price of being home is too high. Those clean streets, the low crime, the economy, those things weren't free. And those silent costs have been cashed in for years. There's a reason why kids at home are so twisted and upset, it's not a trend, it's a symptom of something that's seeped it's way deep into the social zeitgeist. It's a shame, I don't need to go back, but I hope you guys can get out. You don't owe them a penny, and you don't owe anyone your freedom. Get out.

You may like to note the penultimate paragraph about Westerners. They would wax lyrical about swhat you "lauded" about stinkapore: "clean streets, the low crime, the economy" even to the extent of rubbishing their own "First-World" infrastructure. However, "but they won't take up citizenship unless they have a hole in their head".

You may find a lot of names here: < http://www.youtube.com/all_comments?v=nMxTcRs3KDU > vis-à-vis stinkaporean law inflicting years of conscription and lifelong reservist liability for all MALES, no matter how many MALE children the parents conceive.

@ Gopalan Nair:

Many thanks for helping me put up my comments in relation to Singapore's conscription and lifelong reservist laws.

There is a mistake in the earlier comment. I made a typo: 'They would wax lyrical about WHAT you "lauded" about stinkapore: "clean streets, the low crime, the economy" even to the extent of rubbishing their own "First-World" infrastructure.'

Anyway, once again I am extremely grateful for this forum as well as these here:

You like to note this excerpt:

'Interesting topic this one and it would be interesting to see which nationalities after 10 years in SG are a) Citizens or b) PR's. You will probably find that the latter are from US, UK, Europe or other countries with "easy passports" to travel on and they're not really closing the door to their previous abode (so they have a bolt hole if things go pear-shaped here, their country will evacuate them despite their not having contributed to their own country's economy etc).'

I've been living in Australia since i was five, i grew up in Australia and I see it as my home. But i am still a Singaporean citizen and have to go through National Service in a country i don't even remember and only spent holidays there. It's a big waste of time for a country in Peace time. There will be no war, everyone wants peace so why do the young men of Singapore have to suffer? 2 years wasted when we could be studying for our FUTURE, not a war that will never happen.
