Singapore. Has Chee Soon Juan lost his way

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Chee Soon Juan is undoubtedly a very wise man as can be clearly seen from his blog Singapore Democrat. Please see the links below. He had a few days ago reported that his party the Singapore Democratic Party will not contest the elections at Punggol East so as to further the chances of the opposition being returned through the Workers Party and because he believes this is what the people want. Please see his interview with government reporters below.

And here is what I wonder. Has Chee Soon Juan changed completely from what we knew of him even as recent as 2 years ago.

Remember, from as long as I have known him or known of him from as early as 2 decades ago, he was a firebrand. He was the only Singapore politician I had respected other than the late JB Jeyaretnam. He was the only man in the island who was prepared to call a rat, by that very name, I mean the Singapore dictator Lee Kuan Yew. And true to his principles of the fundamentals rights of man, the right to free speech and expression, the right to freedom of assembly, he was prepared to engage in peaceful protest just as Mahatma Gandhi or Martin Luther King would have done and be arrested for it, his idols and mentors. He was the only man who stood by his principles unlike anyone else, in the entire island.

Today, I would say he is a changed man. I understand that he no longer espouses civil disobedience as a future for the island's path to democracy. He does this, I believe, because his supporters feel that such political activism, given the submissive nature of the Singapore population, will not be conducive to their gaining popular support; and therefore he does what they want. In the video above, he says that in democracy, one has to listen to your people, and since the people feel that he should not contest, he therefore complies. And since the people think civil disobedience is not the answer, he complies.

I think this sort of thinking for a leader is wrong. This is not my understanding of leadership. Leadership means doing what you think is right regardless of what your people think, because in the end, the right and just case always succeeds.

On the other hand, comprising what you think for the expediency of satisfying the masses may result in success in politics, but that success would be standing on a weak foundation, on clay and mud, unstable and unreliable. What is worse, you would be going against your own beliefs, and after a point you wouldn’t be able to recognize yourself in the mirror.

And once you begin comprising, it leads to the slippery slope of even more compromises, eventually leading to losing your way completely. Chee's SDP website the Singapore Democrat shows a much larger and sophisticated support base from what it was before when he was taking to the streets. It would appear his supporters are all of the opinion that holding mass civil disobedience protests along Orchard Road calling for freedom and democracy is not the most prudent course of action in Lee Kuan Yew’s Singapore; instead they would prefer to write blog posts and put up learned treaties on freedom and democracy on their web site.

You will see in the above video clip the Harvard Professor espousing the teachings of the American philosopher Rawls who says that freedom of speech, expression and assembly are demands which cannot be compromised, which people are entitled to have and demand, and if peaceful protests are necessary to attain it, it must be done. Here you see Chee speaking for these virtues, but he stops short of actually having the will to carry it out.

Chee no doubt believes that freedom of speech and expression are not merely rights which one should hope for; I believe that he too agrees that the people have the right to use all universally accepted legal means such as peaceful protests and assembly to force a government to comply. Why he stops short is because he thinks wrongly that a good leader is one that obeys his supporters even if he thought they were wrong.

I would ask Chee to think otherwise. By Chee making his decisions on merely what his supporters want, he ends up just like the other opposition politicians under Lee Kuan Yew's one party state like dogs chasing their tails till kingdom come without an iota of progress for half a century.

I ask Chee to get out of this comfort zone with his supporters. The right thing to do is to shake the very foundations of this illegal government of Lee Kuan Yew and demand, I say demand, a free society as required by the Constitution, through peaceful protests, mass civil disobedience or what ever. This path of action may result in his political party dismantling and descending into disarray but so be it. Who needs people such as that. Who need rabbits. What we need to happen is for the government to realize that they simply cannot go on suppressing people’s rights and that we will force a change. But if Chee is going to be surrounded by a bunch of collaborators who refuse to have the courage for the right thing, he would be chasing his tail like that dog until kingdom come.

If Chee is hoping to be another Low Thia Khaing and enter parliament through appeasement instead of principle, he should not be wasting time showing videos of Harvard Professors speaking about Gandhian principles because it would be simply hypocrisy to claim a certain set of beliefs but not have the courage to walk that path.

Finally I must say that Chee Soon Juan has done a lot for his country and his people and undoubtedly deserves credit, no doubt. We all respect him. But I only hope he sees my argument and now embark on a course of change for Singapore, with or without his supporters.

I want to see the Chee Soon Juan I knew. The fighter. Not someone who has descended into a placatory enabler.

Being a firebrand in Singapore just serve the PAP agenda.

People are running to the safety of the "ilLEEgal" PAP government everytime Dr Chee speak. Why, because of the disruption and transformational change which he will bring.
People do not want that.

On the other hand, Workers Party is slowly but effectively drawing out people to vote for opposition and to allow them to see that the opposition can run town council. This is the first step.

The next step is to convince the people that there is an alternative who can run Singapore as well as PAP.

It is a tough task rehabbing Singaporeans to a PAP-addicted living, after half a century of PAP dictatorship.

Congratuations to LEE Li Lian of Workers Party for winning Punggol East.

You say

What makes you privy to what people of Singapore want and do not want? Have you carried out a survey?

You say
"The next step is to convince the people that there is an alternative who can run Singapore as well as PAP".

It is not just running Singapore. What a people want, if I can try to use my common sense, is first of all freedom. What they need is the rule of law. They need to know that they cannot be arbitrarily arrested. They need to know that they have a right to criticize the government without being sued for defamation. They need to know that Malays and Indians are given equal treatment with the Chinese.

This is the first thing, not rehabilitating the people. Without freedom, it really does not matter who runs the government. You are slaves anyway, which Singaporeans today are, with the PAP or the Workers Party.

And one reason why I am a free man is because I can write this under my name, but you can only do so in hiding, anonymous. You are a slave. I am a free man.

And you will continue to be a slave as along as you live in fear of Lee Kuan Yew and continue hiding, "Anonymous".

I have voted in both Australian State and Federal elections in the past 15 years.

I see how politics work in a western democracy.

I have analysis, deduction and induction skills.

I am also sensitive to Singaporeans' "culture", their wants and needs.

Now I am seeing what works and what don't in Singapore politics.

I have seen a few good politicians who have to fight media lies, own party peer jealousy, public servants' indifferences and lobbyists' pressure to serve the people.

Dr Wong Wee Nam is probably the best regarded political strategist and renown analyst in Singapore.

Why the PAP lost so badly in the Punggol East by-election

http://www.sgpolitics.net/?p=8103

- PAP was reluctant to call a by-election after the Punggol East MP resigned over his affairs.

- SDP within 24 hrs mobilised their members and supporters

- within 24 hrs SDP began knocking on doors, covering nearly all of Punggol East.

- PAP decided to call a by-election, knowing that a 3-corner fight is imminent.

- By then, SDP has saturated the ground with opposition messages

- SPD has on hindsight, softened the ground for the WP who are known to be poorly resourced, slow to move, and not well organised.

- at the crucial time, SDP pulled the rug put of the PAP assault which had planned a 2 pronged attack only to find out that SDP had strategically withdrawn allowing WP to to engage the PAP.

At least unlike you that attack me, I have the courage to identify myself. And when you say I haven't acheived anything for myself and Singapore, how much have you acheieved other than writing anonymous posts here?

I believe that I have managed to hurt the Lee Kuan Yew family government in Singapore for more than 3 decades. All that persecution I suffered which was publicly reported has contributed to a large brain drain, particularly of lawyers mainly to Australia and the West not to mention the devastating effect on the government's reputation through this blog read not only in Singapore but worldwide. If what I do does not hurt the Singapore government or achieves nothing, then why are you wasting your time writing to this blog but at the same time hiding your identity.

The majority of Singapore's intelligent and educated have left the island and continues to do so, and this was and is acheived by no small measure by me, which requries people like you to write anonymously to dissude me from what I do.

Being anonymous does not make his arguments less valid. If you don't welcome anonymous comments, disallow them altogether. I see that most commenters on your site are anonymous...

I am sorry, it does greatly reduce it weight. It is simply common sense. For one, it gives the impression they are either not sincere, afraid of being identified, or even working for the establishment. We all know that Lee Kuan Yew indeed has a large cyber department like in Communist China to discredit detractors of the regime. Unfortunately for them, it does not appear to work.

In any case one thinks very little of a man who is only capable of saying something from hiding.

True, not many here identify themselves. Unfortunely this underscores my point of the average Singaporean like you who lives in fear of being identified.

You can of course say what you want and I will post them. But as to how much weight anyone in the rest of the world who reads it would give it questionable.
