As you know, the Chinese people of Hong Kong are protesting in their thousands on the streets against the Chinese governments attempts to rig their election system to ensure only government nominated candidates win. It is reassuring and gratifying to see the courage of these people, fiercely jealous of their freedoms and saying those famous words of Patrick Henry in 1775 "Give me liberty or give me death". It is stirring and comforting to one's soul to see the Chinese of Hong Kong, courageous, proud and standing on principle in the face of terrible odds.
You then turn to Lee Kuan Yew's Singapore and you are disgusted to see the complete reverse. The people of Singapore just like in Hong Kong are predominantly ethnic Chinese, the majority of them being brought into the island recently in Lee Kuan Yew's ethnic cleansing program to ensure the vast majority remain that race and no other. But these Chinese people of Singapore don't have one iota of the principles that their brethren in Hong Kong have.
Although they know that their island is literally a dictatorship belonging to the Lee Kuan Yew family, first to the father and now the son, appointed by the father, they have no complaints whatsoever to live like this. The island has no free press, no right to free speech, expression or assembly, no rule of law where the courts are run by Kangaroo judges. Yet for fifty years the citizens of Singapore who are overwhelmingly Chinese have never found the courage to stand up for their rights and against these dictators.
It is incorrect to say Singaporeans are not doing any protesting, they do in a rather indirect way. If you could call their refusal to have any children in the island, or mass migration for settlement abroad a form of protest, then they are protesting. Singapore has the lowest birth rate in the world, the largest ageing population and the world's highest rate of migration. You could say that even if the people have no balls, unlike the Hong Kong Chinese, to physically protest, to bring the Lee dictatorship down, they are doing it by simply disappearing through not having children, dying and emigrating. You could say, there are many ways to skin a cat.
One thing is certain. If only Singapore island had just a few men of the Hong Kong type, Lee Kuan Yew would have been history a long time ago. Instead today, Singapore is populated by a bunch of timid souls who simply cannot stand up for anything. Which is why, the Singaporeans must be the dream population of any dictator in the world. With a society like this, you could rule forever.

Born Singapore, educated Winstedt School 2 (next to Monks Hill in Newton, Singapore) Raffles Institution, National Service, some travel in Europe, then law studies England, return to Singapore, practiced for 10 years, active Workers Party member, stood elections 1988 and 1991 in Singapore, was harassed and persecuted by Lee Kuan Yew for my political beliefs, left for USA, obtained asylum and admitted California State Bar, practice law ever since in Fremont California near San Francisco. Relinquished Singapore citizenship 2005 because I was not prepared to permit Lee Kuan Yew to unjustly retain my CPF funds if I remained Singapore Citizen. On principle, the only correct thing for me to do was to give it up, for my CPF funds. I am an American Citizen as of 2004.
