There are many reasons why Singaporean young men would want to avoid national service, the main one being
These few facts may help in making up your mind to refuse to serve and go abroad.
1. Refusal to do national service is not an extraditable offense.
2. If you leave, unless your parents have signed some bond with the government, they will not have to suffer any loss.
3. It is best for you to give up your
4. Living in
5. Once you fail to serve, it would mean that if you ever returned, you will be arrested. But this is no big impediment since you can go freely anywhere else in the world, and it is no big loss not to be able to visit
6. The Lee Kuan Yew administration is obviously very upset with what I am doing here in criticizing their corrupt regime through the Internet. But as you can see, there is nothing they can do if you are abroad because you are protected by the laws of the free world, and dictatorships like that of Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew or Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe really doesn’t mean a thing. Except for when you are within their country, they are as weak as a lamb.

For families who don't believe in “national service,” they are more likely to emigrate for their children's sake.
To point out an error in point #3, by refusing to serve NS, the individual cannot renounce his Singapore citizenship.

Thanks for pointing this out, but it makes no difference either way. Once you refuse to serve national service and return, you will be arrested, citizen or not citizen. That does not prevent you from taking up foreign citizenship. If they want to consider you a citizen, they can be our guest.
Singapore is a silly country with silly laws. This is the very reason why increasing numbers show their back to them.
"You see ah, In Singapore ah,we need NS one you know! Unlike other countries ah, we cannot defend ourself otherwise ah, say what? These people who refuse ah, are not loyal one you know! No regard for country or patriotism lah.." Singapore is the best place to live one what!!
Typical 1970-mid 1990s propaganda at work with faithful mouthpieces and "useful idiots" to parrot this, with alternative views unable to get reach the masses.
Too bad the internet changed all this!
For those puzzled at the style of language in the above comment, he is trying to mimic the Singapore English, where Hokkien Chinese is overlaced with English.
I has such a good laugh in a long time reading the Singapore lingo in the above post.
I almost fell from my chair and all around me were wondering why I was laughing just looking at a screen.
Well I told them this self proclaimed hub of the world is also the hub of rotten English.
To Lim Ying Yang,
Please be careful. I don't want you to fall from your chair. You could hurt yourself.
I wish there are changes in Malaysia too
Hi,
Seeking advise...what happens if a secondary SPR (son) refused to do his NS? Will the parents be liable for this action? If yes, what will be the penalty to the parent? If the parent applied for the student grant and finished a course..how will the parent settle it if the secondary SPR has left singapore without doing the mandatory requirement of 36 months employment?
Please need advise from the expert.
Thanks.
