Singapore. How will it be when Lee Kuan Yew dies!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I wonder what will it be when the 86 year old Lee Kuan Yew, the Singaporean Kim Jong Il dies, since this can happen anytime to any 86 year old man. Lee Kuan Yew is not exempted from death, even if he is Lee Kuan Yew, surely!

With people in Singapore only capable of living under some supreme leader or other, which they have been doing for the last 50 years under this man, will they happily worship a replacement, his son?

Will K Shanmugam, Lee Kuan Yew's Minister for Law smoothly switch from crawling before Lee Kuan Yew to crawling before his son?

Will the Singapore state controlled newspapers seamlessly switch from praising the father to praising the son, the new Messiah?

Will Lee Kuan Yew's judge Belinda Ang Saw Ean only too eager to bend over backwards anytime for the father similarly do it for the son?

Will the Singapore population smoothly shift from worshipping the father to worshipping the son as if nothing happened?

And will Gopalan Nair who is dying for his favorite Indian Banana Leaf curry and a Tiger to chase it down, at the Gandhi Eating House in Chander Road be allowed to land at Changi on the next SQ1 flight? (I mean the airport of course, not the building next to it)!

Or should these minions and lackeys be preparing themselves for a rather unpleasant turn of events?

I am not sure. Only time will tell. But still fascinating, even the thought of the possibilities, don't you think?

Since Lee Kuan Yew, no matter what, is 86 years old!

Many say Sing is not unlike North Korea although to a lesser extent. History may well repeat itself when the Great Leader (LKY) dies and the Dear Leader (LHL) takes complete control. As with the NKorean people the transfer of power from father to son, will likely be seamless and smooth and life goes on......

Study the stats of males' obits in the 157th ST and one can clearly see the vast majority of octogenarians (like LKY) die b4 reaching 90, some in their sleep. It's not easy to reach 90. And by sheer luck you do reach 90, every day thereafter is a bonus i.e. expect to drop dead any time any day once u r 90.

Will Pinky Lee Jr follow Dear Leader Kim Jong Ill in a seamless power takeover from Daddy-O?
My take is it's 60:40 for Lee Jr.Change will come for sure, the status quo cannot stand forever.

Very unlikely will Singaporeans kowtow to the son the way they do to the father.
Even a slap here and a slap there by the son will not result in Singaporeans dropping to their knees.
However I have a strong feeling that the limp and effiminate son will take flight soon after the passing of his father.
I am absolutely sure you will be able to have and enjoy your banana leaf mutton and chicken curry at the Gandhi Eating House in the forseable future.

To anonymous Dec 24, 0639,

The fact that Singapore is not a closed society like North Korea lends credence to the argument against yours. But then only time will tell. My feeling is that it will crumble and like the other reader says, the son will very probably absond.

The son has no credibility whatsoever. He knows it and so does everyone else. He is simply going through the motions.

More inspiration from the motherland:

China jails dissident Liu Xiaobo for 11 years [Insert name of person from Singapore here]

...jailed on Friday for 11 years for campaigning for political freedoms .. [ISA]

Liu has been among the most combative critics of China's one-Party rule.

At the trial on Wednesday, the court limited Liu and his lawyers to 14 minutes to defend him [Courts]

Local Chinese-language media did not report the verdict, but word swiftly spread on Twitter [Straits Times]

Recently I visited the Borders bookshop in KL, and I noticed that LKY books are not displayed prominently as in Singapore Borders. Then I realized that not everyone thinks highly of LKY. How stupid I was to be fooled.

On my last day, I climbed the hill in the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, at 537 feet the highest point on the island and the closest thing in Singapore to the jungle it once was. In the unexpected quiet, I returned to what the MM had said about Confucius's belief "that man could be perfected." This was, the MM said with a sigh, "an optimistic way of looking at life." People abuse freedom. That is his beef with America: The rights of individuals to do their own thing allow them to misbehave at the expense of an orderly society. As they say in Singapore: What good are all those rights if you're afraid to go out at night?

When I got to the top of the hill, I thought I might be rewarded with a view of the entire city-state. But there was no view at all—only a rusting communication tower and a cyclone fence affixed with a sign saying "Protected Place" and showing a stick figure drawing of a soldier aiming a rifle at a man with his hands raised.

Later I mentioned this to Calvin Fones, the shrink. "See, that shows the progress we've made," he said. "Until a few years ago, we had the same sign, except the guy was lying on the ground, already shot." And then, being a Singaporean, living a life he didn't believe possible anywhere else in Asia, he laughed.
